Byte Sized / Web World by Luke Bainbridge
www.beechroad.com
Websites are one of the most indulgent mediums around, allowing anyone with a basic knowledge of multi-media to present their views, hobbies, interests or even sexual pastimes to the rest of the online world. Some may dedicate their onine space to cult television series, some may decide to preach about the potential effects of genetically modified food. One person, however, has decided to show the world the delights of Beech Road in Chorlton. For the uninitiated, Beech Road is often cited as the trendiest and most vibrant street in Manchester's trendiest and most vibrant suburb - usually, it must he said, by Chorltonians themselves

- being home to a cluster of bars and restaurants, clothes shops, interior design shops and delicatessens. The site contains information and photos of all the shops and services on Beech Road, from Soap Opera launderette to Beech Road Gallery. There's arbive pictures of the street from 50 years ago (when you could buy a two-bed terraced house for a mere £50,000) and the Beech Road obsessive even extends as far as holding the curry challenge of Beech Road between B2 Tandood and Royce (the latter winning). It's all done for the love of Beech Road - as one of the creators says 'lt's just our favourite street- and, as befits a site from Chorlton, the copyright blurb reads 'material from this site should only he ripped off by eco-friendly worker co-ops'.

One of our regular contributors replies

They say that all publicity is good publicity and I am not referring to Sophie Rhys Jones' breasts, I am of course talking about our review in City Life. This mighty organ has been pointed in the direction of Beech Rd and and we come out relatively unscathed.

But you journalists, why do you  sneer? Why be cynical about Chorlton just because people enjoy living  there?

One of the reasons why Chorlton is vibrant is because there is a  sense of community, what is wrong with that? and this web site is a fun way of contributing to that community.

And please, don't take us too seriously, we don't and nor should any non  Eco Warriors who infringe our copyright. We're not so uptight that we can't take the piss out of ourselves.

Thanks again to City Life for the publicity, I wonder if it will increase our hits. If there's anyone out there who'd like to contribute a review of City Life please feel free to contact Fishtank.
