June 2000 Hopefully, in the months ahead I shall be able to provide bulletins of my activities and initiatives as they affect Chorlton. If you wish to comment you can find my contact details at the end of this column. A Spending Lesson I am able to announce that £9 million is to be channelled into Oakwood High School. I am confident that this will provide to be a thorough modernisation of the site off Nell Lane and also lead to improved facilities for the community. I am continuing to meet with Education Officials to discuss how this can best achieved. The project is set to be completed by August 2002. School's Out I will shortly visit the new After-School Club at Chorlton Primary School that offers activities through the City Council's Early Years and Childcare Initiative. This should offer a great facility for local children - and parents alike. In April, I helped to launch an after-school club at nearby Barlow Hall Primary School that is funded by the Government and already well used by children from the Merseybank and Barlow Hall estates. Changes Up the Junction I have now received details of improvements designed to improved road safety at the Barlow Moor/Wilbraham Road Junctions above junction. It is an exceptionally busy area at peak hours and I want to see a package that prioritises pedestrian safety in this area. This will follow on from work already carried out at the Wilbrhama Road/Edge Lane junction. Trams on track for Chorlton It looks as if tenders will be invited in the Autumn from firms wishing to take on £289 million project to build three new Metrolink routes, including the construction of a line through Chorlton and on to Wythenshawe Hospital and Manchester Airport. The route will follow that of the disused Midland Railway that the council had the foresight to preserve, with local stops at Hough End, St. Werburgh's Road, Barlow Moor Road and Chorlton Village. The Metrolink is integral to saving car journeys and providing a more environmentally-friendly mode of public transport. I remain eager to see an extension from Chorlton to Didsbury being built at the same time as the Airport link. Music for a While Congratulations to the Chorlton based Music for a While Group that has just secured a £1,000 donation from the Lloyds TSB Foundation. The group, of which I am a Patron is participating in the BBC Music Live Festival. Val's Back And it's well done to Val
Stevens on being re-elected a Chorlton's Councillor on May 4th. Val had
an 849 vote majority over her rivals - recognition of her tireless work
for the Chorlton area. The election saw the advent of supermarket voting
- with shoppers at Safeway able to fill out a ballot paper in the weekend
before polling day.
Swimming Baths Many users of the Chorlton
Leisure Centre will be aware of a Best Value Review currently taking place
into leisure services throughout Manchester. The purpose of this review
is to ensure that public funds are spent prudently and to the best possible
means. I am seeking assurances about the future of swimming pools at Chorlton
and Withington, both of which are hugely popular. I am keen to ensure they
remain well used in the future.
Noddy (award) Holder Chorlton's Cosgrove Hall Films, the makers of children's animated favourites such as Noddy and Dangermous, have won the Queen's Award for Enterprise for its overseas sales. The company was started in 1976 by animators Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall and has won many plaudits in the past - including BAFTAS and international Emmys. Their programmes have been sold to over 80 countries worldwide. A Fare Deal As I write, a £74,000 project to give Chorlton a new-look bus station is nearing completion. The make-over, for the Barlow Moor Road site, was kicked off by Cllr. Val Stevens, and will include new bus shelters, street furniture, better lighting and improved access for buses. Contact
