Shop Local ! You might not always have the choice and convenience that you get at the shopping mall. But you will avoid being caught in the traffic.
Local shops are more than just somewhere to pick up a pint of milk or a loaf of bread they provide a focal point for an area. Proximity to facilities increases the value of property. In many towns, villages and suburbs, one of the key indicators of change over the last twenty years has been the decline in the number and variety of local shops. Whilst these shops have been unable to compete with the range of goods and services in towns and out-of-town shopping centres, the other benefits they provide should be recognised. For people without transport or those who find it hard to get about, these small shops provide a lifeline. Older people can shop regularly for small amounts of food. The shops also provide social contact, news of what’s happening in the area, details of local events and an outlet for local produce and crafts. They can provide employment for local people and can draw people in from outside. Things are not going to improve until you start to value community, sustainability and a convivial neighbourhood more highly. This material was taken from various editions of the New Economics
magazine 1997, 1998.
