| This was the first road to be built running southwards off Beech Road. It marked the edge of the village shops as it does today. Beyond it eastwards, lay two farms and then Barlow Moor Road. In 1895 a block of terraces of six houses was constructed. They were numbered as you would expect 1 through 6 (not 1,3,5,7 etc) and the name Egerton Terrace was affixed to the block. Everything in these parts is named after the feudal landlord, Lord Egerton of Tatton. It's pronounced 'Edge-err-ton'. They comprised of two bedrooms, a small front garden and a back yard. The bay window and a coal cellar complete with a coal hole in the path would make these desirable properties at the time. They are still desirable now. |
