Section
of the 1905 map of Chorlton-cum-Hardy.
Cross Road was built in 1870 as a
development of semi detached villas. Facing it was then a ploughed field
- later turned into the Recreation Ground. Notice the Bowling Green, now
the car park of The Irish Association Club, but originally
Chorlton-cum-Hardy Bowling Club. The Hall now the Irish Club was built
for a Masonic Lodge but they moved to grander premises up High Lane. At
the bottom of the picture is Beech House. Secluded behind trees, it was
the residence of John Holt a very wealthy cotton capitalist. After his
death it was demolished c.1909 and as yet we've found no photographs of
it. |
| There's this bloke up in Newcastle who is
reprinting old Ordnance Survey maps of Britain and Ireland - mostly from
the 1894-1910 era. Every month another half a dozen titles come out. A big
task if you want to cover these islands at a scale of 14 inches to a mile
on maps that cover about one and a half square miles. The detail is superb
being taken from the original 1/2500 plans. To look at Beech Road in full I had to buy both maps of Chorlton because it's at the bottom of one and some is on top of the other. However at £1.95 each they represent excellent value. If you like studying old maps to see what your area looked like before it was re-developed then these are for you. |
