From A to C and
back again. Those successful books and countless tv programmes on 'Great Railway Journeys of The World'. Wistful, exotic travel, great scenery and colourful local characters. So how about 'Worst Bus Journeys : tales of misery, depression and tedium or is it an adventure in post-industrial reality. It's not what you do it's how you say what you did? Let's pick out the number 168 from Chorlton Bus Station to Ashton-under-Lyne. There are two every hour and the journey time is scheduled to take 1 hour 27 minutes. Chorlton is an alright to place to live, and Ashton has a great market and a nice library-cum-art gallery. So it might fail being the worst. You could set off from a muggers alley of swirling litter and end up on bleak boarded up estate full of ugly youth and savage dogs. But all that time on a bus across a city. That's nearly as long as a football match or a good film without the filler scenes. So long it would be quicker to use alternative services which involve changing buses. There again, coming back I could get the train to Victoria, the metro to Stretford and walk the mile home. It would still be quicker than 87mins plus bad traffic hold-ups. It's only an idea. Like the way some people put themselves through marathon races or getting over streams with logs, an oil drum, and three other people sharing your experience. Great they say but never again is what they mean. Still at the planning stage. That is using the online timetables, looking at the webcams and repeating I haven't really got the time. Let's leave it for now. |
